The Data Over Time widget shows how values on your board change over time, using historical data. Track trends, spot patterns, and understand how your work has evolved rather than relying on a single point-in-time snapshot.
What is the Data Over Time widget?
The Data Over Time widget visualizes historical changes to your board data on a chart. It's available on both dashboards and board views.
Use it to understand trends over time instead of a single snapshot, track progress against goals across days, weeks, or months, and identify patterns in workload, status changes, or numeric KPIs. Segment your data by a supported column to compare groups side by side, and on board views, drill down into any data point to see the exact items behind it.
For example, a team wants to see how their task volume by priority has changed over the past several months. Using the Data Over Time widget, they set the Y-axis to Count Items, grouped by the Priority column, and the X-axis to a custom timeframe with monthly intervals. The resulting chart shows how many tasks were Critical, High, Medium, Low, or Best Effort each month, making it easy to spot growing pressure on higher-priority work as volume increases.
Add the Data Over Time widget
To add the widget to a board view or dashboard, select + Add widget and choose Data Over Time.
Choose your chart type
Select a chart type for your data, such as a bar, line, or column chart.
Set your X-axis
The X-axis always represents time. Choose a timeframe (1W, 1M, 3M, 6M, YTD, or a custom range) and an interval (daily, weekly, or monthly) to control how your data points are grouped. The chart displays a maximum of 31 data points, so wider ranges are aggregated to fit this limit.
Set your Y-axis
The Y-axis shows either a numeric column value or a count of items. Select a column or Count items, then choose whether to group the data (for example, by status or priority) to compare segments on the same chart.
Drill down into your data
When you view the widget on a board view, you can select a data point to drill down and see the recorded state of your items at that point in time. You can see the value at that point and which items contributed to it.
Additional settings
-
Customize: Edit the color, name, and order of each label in your chart to match your preferences or brand colors.
-
Benchmark lines: Add a benchmark line with a set number value and label to compare your data against a fixed target. You can add more than one benchmark line and assign each a different color.
- Groups: Choose which of your board's groups to include in the chart. Select the top group to use your board's main grouping, or select specific groups to narrow what's shown.
How is this different from the Chart Widget?
The Chart Widget's line graph can plot values across a date column already on your board, showing trends based on the data as it exists today.
The Data Over Time widget is different. It automatically tracks and stores your board's historical values over time, independent of any date column. This means you can see what your data looked like at past points in time, not just how it's organized today. On board views, you can also drill down into the exact items that made up a past data point.
