Board owners shape the board and manage access. This article shows how to identify, add, or remove owners, outlines what owners can do, highlights Enterprise-only role assignment, and explains how admins can change ownership when a previous owner is deactivated or a board has no owner.
Add or remove board owners
By default, the creator of the board is the first owner. To add more owners, select the Invite icon in the upper-right corner of your board:
In the invite list, select the grey crown next to a person’s name; it turns blue to indicate ownership. Select the blue crown again to remove ownership.
What board owners can do
Board owners shape the board and manage access. They can invite people and teams, change who else is an owner, and adjust board structure, such as columns and groups. Owners always bypass board permissions.
Assign board roles
On monday.com Enterprise, board owners can assign built-in roles. Open your board and select Invite in the upper-right corner. Add people or teams, then choose a role for each person from the dropdown. Roles define the maximum a person can do on the board.
For instance, Contributors cannot add or remove columns. If someone needs to manage columns, change their role to Editor.
A quick example helps anchor the model. A project manager is an Owner and can shape the board’s structure. Task managers are Contributors who handle task changes and cannot add or remove columns. Project stakeholders are Viewers who track progress and ask questions in updates without changing item details.
Changing board ownership
You can change ownership when the previous owner was deactivated or when a board has no owner. These actions are available to account admins in the Administration section.
If the previous owner was deactivated
Open Administration from your profile picture in the upper right corner, select Directory, and then select the Board ownership tab.
In the first dropdown, choose the current owner (the deactivated user). In the second dropdown, choose the new owner, and then select Add new owner. A confirmation appears; select Add as an owner to finish. This works for all board types.
If a board has no owner
In the Board ownership tab, select yourself (or another admin) as the new owner under the Manage boards without owners, and then select Add new owner:
This assigns ownership so you can access the board again.
