Connect Boards Column (Previously Link to Item Column)

The Connect Boards Column allows you to easily link a column to the items of another board. This column is a great way to connect information between two boards. This comes in handy when your workflow involves interrelated boards. For example, your board listing names of clients can connect with your clients' orders on another board. That way you never have to go searching for a client's related orders. The information is right there!

There are so many possibilities with this column! Keep reading to learn how it works. 👇

How to add it

To add it, click on the + icon located on the top right of your board. From the resulting dropdown menu, select "Connect boards" as so:

Note: If you do not see this column type in the dropdown menu, click on the 'More columns' button to access the full column center, and search for this column type.

How it works

Step 1

After adding the column, a screen will pop up prompting you to select which board you'd like to link to:

Step 2

Select the board you would like to connect with your column. In my example, I want to connect the board "Cupcake" with the board "Clients".

 Step 3

After selecting the "Clients" board, I'll have the option to create a Connect Boards Column on that board as well to allow for bidirectional linkage. In the image below you can see that the "Clients" board is also linked back to the "Cupcake" board.

If you choose this option, the links to the connected board will automatically be populated. No need to flip back and forth between the boards to make sure they're manually synced! Changes made on one board will be reflected onto the connected board as well.

Step 4

Then, you'll need to select whether you'd like to link to multiple items. If you want to prevent this option, simply uncheck the box as seen below.

You can change this setting at any time by going to the column settings as well.

Step 5

Once connected, if I click inside any cell in the column it will reveal the items from the "Clients" board. I can pick the item(s) I want to connect from the "Clients" board. For example, I want to connect Velvet Cupcake to Client 1 and Client 2.

Next to each cupcake, we will now have the name of the client that ordered it. If you chose more than 1 item, as in the screenshot below, the column will show the number of items linked there. You can hover over it to show the names of the linked items.Frame_1.png

That's not it! Keep reading below to discover more amazing stuff! 👇

The pop-up view

Once you have connected the items between the 2 boards, you will be able to view details of your connected items directly from the board you're currently in. To do so, hover over the right of the cell and click "Open View". It will open a card showing all of the information for that item from the linked board.

You can update any information about the client directly from the cupcake board. This will automatically update the client's board.

How to unlink a board

Click on the arrow located on the right of your column's title and select column settings. Once done, click on the cross (X) to remove the board(s).

Note: Once you click on "detach link" all the previous links added in your column will be cleared.
