Your portfolio keeps every project connected and synced, so each project is represented by a high-level item on your Portfolio board, and its most important details flow up automatically.
Every now and then, the connection between a high-level item and its project board can break. When it does, a warning icon appears next to the item. You can reconnect them yourself in just a few clicks, without needing to contact support.
This article explains why a project can become disconnected, how to spot it, and how to reconnect it to its high-level representation in your portfolio.
Why does a project become disconnected?
The Portfolio board gives you a high-level view of all your projects, while each project board holds the low-level details. Behind the scenes, the two are linked through the Connect Boards Column and Mirror Columns, so everything stays synced and aligned.
Occasionally, this link breaks, leaving a high-level item without its project board. This can happen for a number of reasons:
- A portfolio was deleted and later restored. The high-level items are restored, but some of their underlying projects may no longer be connected.
- A project was moved to, or connected with, a different portfolio.
- A project board was duplicated or moved between workspaces.
- A project was created from a template that did not automatically link back to the portfolio.
When a high-level item is disconnected, you can still view and manage its data directly on the Portfolio board. However, because it is no longer linked to a project board, changes will not sync between the two. Reconnecting restores that automatic sync.
How to tell a project is disconnected
Disconnected projects are easy to spot: an unlinked icon appears next to the item's name in your Portfolio board. Hovering over the icon confirms that the item is not connected to a project board.
Reconnect a project to your portfolio
Once you have found an item with an unlinked icon, reconnecting it takes three steps:
1 In your Portfolio board, locate the high-level item showing the unlinked icon.
2 Click the unlinked icon to open the connection window.
3 Search for the name of the project board you would like to connect, select it, and click Connect.
The unlinked icon disappears, and your high-level data, such as project progress, project health, and timelines, will sync between the project board and your portfolio once again.
Good to know
- Reconnecting a project does not change any of the data on the project board or the Portfolio board. It only restores the link between them.
- Each high-level item connects to a single project board. If more than one item shows an unlinked icon, simply repeat these steps for each one.
-
You will need edit access to the project board you are connecting to in order to reconnect it to your portfolio.
