Who can use this feature:
monday dev users only
available on Pro and Enterprise plans

Note: This feature is in Beta. If you do not have access yet, you will soon!

To work efficiently and strategically, it's essential to be able to see the smaller tasks that will eventually add up to a new feature. Understanding this dependency and seeing how a task impacts the big picture can both motivate your team and help them to work in the context of your larger goal. With Hierarchy, you can define your own hierarchy and begin to work in context with your team!

Read on to learn more about this feature, how to set it up, and its capabilities.

How to add Hierarchy

To create a Hierarchy, click the + symbol to add a board view to your board. From the list, select Hierarchy:

In the new view, click New Feature or click Create hierarchy to begin setting it up:

How to set it up

After you initiate the process of setting up a hierarchy, the next screen will allow you to begin connecting your boards.

Building your hierarchy levels

In this example, the Product Roadmap ✏️ is at the top of the hierarchy and we're choosing to connect it to epics on the Epics 🪐 board:

Hierarchies 3.png

The Product Roadmap ✏️ becomes level one of the hierarchy as indicated by the L1 next to its name. The Epics 🪐 board becomes level two of the hierarchy as indicated by the L2 next to its name:

For now, you can only add a total of four levels to your Hierarchy.

Customize columns

You can choose which columns to display in your hierarchy. To customize your selections, hover over the name of one of your selected boards and click Customize columns:

Use the eye icons to choose which columns will and will not be visible:

If you would prefer not to see any columns while you set up your hierarchy, toggle the Show columns switch off. You will still see the selected columns in Hierarchy after set up, but you will no longer see them during setup, allowing you a more simplified view:

Click Set view to finalize your setup:

Note: Your hierarchy will only be available to view from your level one board.

Using your hierarchy

Expand your visibility

In your hierarchy, you can use the arrow to the left of an item name to Expand or Collapse the subsequent level:

Add to your hierarchy

You can use the + symbol to add an item to any board in your hierarchy:

You can use the New feature button in the top left corner to add to the highest level of your hierarchy. In this case, the terminology is New feature because our highest level is our Product Roadmap ✏️:

Navigating your hierarchy

In the overhead menu, you have several options for navigating the highest level of your hierarchy:

  • Search. Use this field to search your hierarchy.
  • Person. Use this button to select a person on your team and only view items where the selected person is assigned.
  • Filter. Use this button to filter the items in your hierarchy so that only relevant items are visible. You can use any of the columns in your hierarchy as a basis for your filter.
  • Sort. This button can be used to choose how you would like to view your hierarchy. In our example, we chose to sort by the Score column in descending order, from highest to lowest score.
  • Edit hierarchy. This button will take you back to the original setup screen, where you can choose boards and customize your columns.
  • Collapse headers. You can use the carrot on the far right to collapse the headers that show the name of your board and other views. This gives you a cleaner working view of your hierarchy.

Item menu

Each item in your hierarchy has a menu that can be accessed from the three dots on the far right:

Frame 17.png

In this example, level one of our hierarchy is our Product Roadmap ✏️ board and our items are features. When you open the menu, you will see options to:

  • Open the feature. When you open the feature you can review the Feature overview, write in the Updates section, review the item's Activity Log, and more.
  • Collapse or expand the feature's hierarchy for more information.
  • Copy the link to the feature.
  • Customize columns visible in your hierarchy for this board. You can adjust column visibility from this menu using the eye icons.
  • Delete the feature. This will delete the item, but it will not delete all of the items organized in lower levels of the hierarchy. Instead, it will remove the connection.
Note: Any actions taken in your hierarchy will be reflected on your board. If you delete an item in your Hierarchy, only the item will be deleted. It will not delete the items organized beneath it in the hierarchy.

Future improvements

  • For now, you can only add four levels to your hierarchy. Based on your feedback, we may add the ability to add more than four layers in the future.
