How to change a column type

Have you ever wanted to keep all of the data in your column but change the type of column? Keep reading to learn how to change the type of column on your board without having to delete it and start from scratch! 🎉

How it works

There are a few different available transformations for your columns. When you choose to transform one column into another type, your data is translated and reformatted to suit the new column type! For example, transforming a Dropdown Column into a Status Column will turn each of your drop-down items into status labels!

Let's take a look at an example! We have a Rating Column on our board and we want to turn it into a Numbers Column. To do so, we'll click the arrow to the right of the column's title, and click "Change Column Type". Now, we'll be given a list of column options that the column we've selected can be transformed into. In this case, we'll choose "Numbers".

This action will create an additional column with the same values as the original column. A pop-up window will ask you if you'd like to "Go back" to keep the original column, or if you'd like to "Keep changes".

If you choose to keep the changes, your original column will be deleted and replaced with the new selected column! In this case, all of our ratings (hearts out of 5) have been changed to a number from 0-5. If you choose to go back, your new column will be deleted and your original column will be restored just the way it was!
