The Chart View is a great way to see the analytics side of your workflow. With our Chart Widget, you can now pull out information from several boards and gather them all in one chart! This widget is a must-have to enhance your workflow! Keep reading to learn how it works. 📊
How to add it
Simply click on "Add widget" at the top of your dashboard and select "Chart" from the dropdown menu as shown below:
Choose your boards
We're managing a team that has two main running projects split between two locations. Our Tel Aviv team and our New York team each have a board to manage the articles they write, and a board to manage the weekly tasks that they must complete. We want to build a chart to combine data from all 4 of these boards. The first step is to pick the 4 relevant boards:
Choose your groups
Next, we can choose which of these groups we want to pull data from. In this example, we've selected all groups, but in some cases, we may want to exclude irrelevant groups or only select one or two relevant groups from a large board.
Pick your chart type
Whether you want a pie chart, a stacked chart or just any chart, we've got you covered! For more information about each type of chart, check out this article. Pick whatever chart type suits your needs from the list in the right pane:
Choose the values
Choose which information from your board you wish to be reflected on the x-axis. When you click below "Shared Columns" you can select a column that is shared amongst all of the boards connected to your widget from the drop-down menu! In the example below, we have a "Status" column with the same values in all 4 of our boards. If we select this column, we can ensure that the chart reflects all 4 of our boards equally.
If you have different Status Columns in each board, you can select which specific column you'd like to display for each of your boards. For example, our "NY - Articles" and "TLV - Articles" boards each have two Status Columns. For each of these boards, we can select which one we'd like to be reflected in the chart from the drop-down menu.
If you have selected Date Columns, you can customize the chart even more by clicking on "Group By". Whether you want the dates to be grouped by Day, Week, Month, Quarter, Year... we got you covered!
Next, choose what the y-axis on your chart will represent. You can select a shared column, if your boards have them, or you can choose the column type from the drop down menu. You can also choose the common option to have an item count as your y-axis, like we've done in the example below.
This chart is now showing us how many times each status label has been selected across our boards.
Add a Benchmark
If you want to use this chart to see how you're measuring up to your goals, you can add a benchmark! Customize it however you'd like, with the benchmark value, a descriptive title, and the color of your choice! In the example below, we've added a benchmark line at 60 items in the color green to match the "Done" label in our Status Column! This way, we can make sure that we hit our goal of completing at least 60 items this week.
Click "+Add benchmark line" to add more than one benchmark! In the example below, we added a benchmark line to make sure that we are working on at least 25 items each week and staying below 2 "Stuck" tasks each week.
- Sort By
You can choose the order of the values by switching the y-axis or the a-axis in descending or ascending order. For example, if you choose y-axis ascending, you will see your items ordered from left to right with label with the lowest count of items at the left and the highest count to the right. If you choose y-axis descending, you will see the graph flipped - with the highest count of items at the left and the lowest count to the right.
- Show only top/bottom items
If you have a graph with too many bars or pie pieces and find it difficult to translate or extract your data, you can make it a little easier on the eyes! Rather than having all of the bars, you can select only the top or bottom items. You can even customize how many of these items you'd like to see in your chart! In the example below, we've chosen to see only out top 2 items.
- Cumulative data and empty values
You also have the option to display your chart with cumulative data rather than current data. This is particularly useful if you want to see the progress over a month or a year. If you decide to show cumulative data, each item on your graph will reflect all previous data for that item in addition to the data currently on your board. In this example, our cumulative data shows us all of the tasks and articles that have previously been marked as "Working on it" or "Stuck" in the past in addition to those marked with those labels in our board currently.
You can select the option to show empty values! In the example below, we've checked this option, and we see a new bar appear in our graph with all of the items without a label in our Status Column.
When you are satisfied with your chart, click "Done" to launch the widget in your dashboard!
Choose how to display your widget
After we finish outlining our settings, we can choose how we'd like this widget to be displayed in our dashboard! We can display it as:
- "Chart" showing all of the items from our boards in a chart
- "Table" displaying the groups of items across all of our boards exactly how they would appear in each of their boards. This is a really great option if you want to track items across several boards and need to glance at all of them together
- "Split Mode" (as seen in the image below) combining both views together so you can see your items in a chart along with the original data from your boards!
Filter your chart
- Filter with a click
Drill down into the nitty-gritty details of your chart with just one click! When your chart is displayed in "Split Mode", you can click on any section in your chart to zoom in on the section and view below each item in that section! In this example, When we click on the each bar in our graph, we will isolate the selected label from our Status Column, and below it, we will view every item marked with that label across all 4 of our boards!
- Tornado filter
If we don't want to see all of the dates and timelines on our boards, we can click the tornado icon to filter out our information! 🌪
We're interested in seeing Kayla's tasks from March 15th-19th, so we've selected a specific group and person from the People Column. If we want to return to this view the next time we open our dashboard, we can click 'Save to this widget', and our widget will remain will this filter until we click 'Clear' in our filter menu.
Export or Print your Chart
Want to use your chart outside of monday.com? Export it right from your dashboard! Toggle your dashboard over to "Edit" mode, and click the 3 dot menu on the top right corner of your widget. Click "Export" and then select whatever format you want to export your chart to! You can select "Print" from this drop-down menu to print your chart!
